Mary

Our Lady Undoer of Knots, day 7

Immaculate Virgin Mary from Whom countless graces flow for your children, the Hope of all who are afflicted, I stand before You to ask You to undo this knot (…) and also the knots that I sub-consciously have, that are the daily cause of my unhappiness, impeding me from praise, joy, and the desire to sow the seeds of goodness, but most of all, they keep me far from my God

Our Lady Undoer of Knots, pray for me!

Consider the depth and ramifications of the petition to Our Lady. We place immense trust in her wisdom and insight. She perceives us as God sees us, understanding our deepest subconscious entanglements, knowing us in ways no psychologist could, able to untie us in ways nothing earthly can. She sees us as the infant we entered the world as, as the baby crying in our imperfect earthly mother’s arms, receiving the kisses of our earthly father’s lips as a baby. We were innocent, even though tainted with original sin, and God is pure love, comprehending all. He blessed Our Holy Mother with divine insight. Consider this quote from the opening of Thomas of Celano’s biography of St Francis, keeping in mind Francis’ parents were upstanding thriving Christian parents. Pietro may get a bad rap for being materialistic, yet overall he was a loving and caring father. Contrast Brother Thomas’ words with one of the most powerful quotes of scripture following.

There was in the city of Assisi, which stands on the borders of the valley of Spoleto, a man named Francis, who from his earliest years was brought up by his parents frowardly, according to the vanity of the world, and, by long imitation of their wretched life and conduct he became himself still more vain and froward. For this wicked custom has so taken root everywhere among those who bear the Christian name, and this pernicious doctrine is everywhere so settled and established as though by public law, that men purposely bring up their children even from the cradle with excessive carelessness and laxity. For at first, when we are beginning to speak or rather to lisp, little children only just born are taught by signs and sounds certain very shameful and detestable things, and when they are weaned they are forced not only to say but even to do actions full of lust and wantonness. Being compelled by the fear which is natural to their age, not one of them dares to behave virtuously, for this subjects them to harsh punishments. Well, therefore, says a secular poet, “Because we have grown up amid our parents’ practices, therefore [even] from childhood all evils pursue us.” This witness is true, for the more fully the parents’ wishes have been realized, the more harmful is it for their children. But after all, when the children are a little older they always fall into worst conduct still, of their own impulse. For a corrupt tree grows from a corrupt root, and what has once been thoroughly depraved can scarce be brought back to the rule of uprightness. But when they have begun to enter the gates of youth what manner of persons think you that they become? Then indeed, plunging into every kind of debauchery (since they are free to fulfil all their pleasure) they give themselves over with all their might to the service of wickedness. For, having thus become by voluntary servitude the slaves of sin, they yield all their members as instruments for iniquity, and, showing forth nothing of the Christian religion in their life and conduct, shelter themselves under the mere name of Christianity.

Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD; and you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. And these words which I command you this day shall be upon your heart; and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. –Deuteronomy

A path to healing

Today begins a new novena, the opening of prayer to Our Lady Undoer of Knots, underneath procuring guidance from Raphael, acknowledging the devotion of Pope Francis. Thoughts of my son linger, responsibilities, cares, love, longing to bring fruition to life. Asmodeus is the demon of death, the lover of failure and frustration, the relisher of broken dreams, the admirer of broken hearts and human suffering. Asmodeus garners pleasure from the struggles of men and women. Wickedly, he adores the crushing of children. The tying tighter of knots and complexities remains his diabolic, insidious mission.

Avoiding complexities and subtleties, millennials rally against suffering, against social injustice, seeking whole heartily to bring healing to the world, to bring wisdom and understanding upon an individual level therefore contributing to the greater whole. May Raphael guide my son and his friends, allowing them to open themselves to the fruits of the Holy Spirit, the expanding of theological virtues, the knowing of the love, compassion, and dispensing of graces existing within the Immaculate Heart of Mary. May Our Lady Undoer of Knots unravel the knots within the individual lives of my son and those he centers his life upon. Holy Mother unravel and untie them so they can be strong, utilizing the amazing intellects Our Father granted. Allow them to be everything they aspire to be, while guiding them to eternal peace. Do not allow Asmodeus to break their wills, to break their hearts, forcing them to submit their ideals to broken dreams and childish fantasies. Let Asmodeus not cleverly misguide their good hearts and intent into personal harm. You, gentlest of all mothers, know and love their hearts, do not allow Asmodeus to strip them of their strength, to devour their zest for life, their love of adventure and victory, to force them to submit their intelligence to the wrath of those consumed with only being right, knowing nothing of love, surrender, and the willingness to be defeated so powerfully displayed by Our Loving Savior. Untie the knots within their lives Loving Mother so they can be warriors of good, rather than conquers of personal brokenness, self-consumed glory and the will for power. Let them do the work of Our Holy Father, for within His mysteries I capitulate, aspiring only for love. A man of prayer, I know nothing of certainty.

Prayer to Mary, Undoer of Knots: Virgin Mary, Mother of fair love, Mother who never refuses to come to the aid of a child in need, Mother whose hands never cease to serve your beloved children because they are moved by the divine love and immense mercy that exists in your heart, cast your compassionate eyes upon me and see the snarl of knots that exist in my life.
You know very well how desperate I am, my pain, and how I am bound by these knots.
Mary, Mother to whom God entrusted the undoing of the knots in the lives of his children, I entrust into your hands the ribbon of my life.
No one, not even the Evil One himself, can take it away from your precious care. In your hands there is no knot that cannot be undone.
Powerful Mother, by your grace and intercessory power with Your Son and My Liberator, Jesus, take into your hands today this knot. [Mention petition] I beg you to undo it for the glory of God, once for all. You are my hope.
O my Lady, you are the only consolation God gives me, the fortification of my feeble strength, the enrichment of my destitution, and, with Christ, the freedom from my chains. Hear my plea. Keep me, guide me, protect me, o safe refuge! Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me. Amen.

Tilma early in the morning

OUR LADY OF GAUD.56KB.JPG

Three mysteries of the Rosary for the conversion of the world at five in the morning at Tilma is a refreshing way once a month to invigorate the spirit.  A Mary statue recovered and renovated, recalling glory days as the Highway Mary of Cleveland, a devotional prayed to in post-WWII days before traveling the highways in automobiles, a nation hitting its strongest stride.  Prayer groups allow the losing of one’s self amidst others of faith, the sharing of infusion. Dropping one’s defenses, desires, demands and delusions in the vulnerability of the moment before the most holiest of mothers is a sacred way, unification being embraced. Nothing more needs to be said. The quieting of the soul, allowing God to fill, can truly only be accomplished through prayer.  A poem, fifteenth century Middle English lyrics, praising Mary and her Divine Son.

I Sing of a Maiden

I sing of a maiden
That is matchless,
King of all kings
For her son she chose.

He came as still
Where his mother was
As dew in April
That falls on the grass.

He came as still
To his mother’s bower
As dew in April
That falls on the flower

He came as still
Where his mother lay
As dew in April
That falls on the spray.

Mother and maiden
There was never, ever one but she;
Well may such a lady
God’s mother be.

The Holy Spirit gift of Wisdom

Then Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain. The glory of the LORD settled on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days; and on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud. Now the appearance of the glory of the LORD was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel. And Moses entered the cloud, and went up on the mountain. And Moses was on the mountain forty days and forty nights…  –Exodus

He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has fixed by his own authority.  But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Sama’ria and to the end of the earth.”  And when he had said this, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.  And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”  —Acts of the Apostles

Holy Spirit Novena eighth day (EWTN)

Bend the stubborn heart and will,
melt the frozen,
warm the chill.
Guide the steps that go astray!

WISDOM: Embodying all the other gifts, as charity embraces all the other virtues, Wisdom is the most perfect of the gifts. Of wisdom it is written “all good things came to me with her, and innumerable riches through her hands.” It is the gift of Wisdom that strengthens our faith, fortifies hope, perfects charity, and promotes the practice of virtue in the highest degree. Wisdom enlightens the mind to discern and relish things divine, in the appreciation of which earthly joys lose their savor, whilst the Cross of Christ yields a divine sweetness according to the words of the Saviour: “Take up thy cross and follow me, for my yoke is sweet and my burden light.

Come, O Spirit of Wisdom, and reveal to my soul the mysteries of heavenly things, their exceeding greatness, power and beauty. Teach me to love them above and beyond all the passing joys and satisfactions of earth. Help me to attain them and possess them for ever. Amen.

May the month of Mary

To Our Lady

Mary, I’m awkward at work or play,
And from the path of duty often do I stray.

Mary, Mother, guide me in all I do or say,
For I’m a willful child and often have my way,

Mary, make me gentle as the winds of May,
Mary, make me see the right and do it every day.

Oh Mary, hear an awkward,
Listen to her prayer–
Watch over her, dear Mother,
And keep her in your care.

By G. H. Harriott

Nurtured on the fruits of the Holy Spirit, St Louis de Montfort amazingly identifies a startling reality about Mary. More than even God, Satan despises Mary. Arrogant to the highest degree, Satan can comprehend God’s ability to thwart his diabolical ways, however the thought of a mere woman, a lowlife handmaid of the Lord able to dominate him sends him into the greatest outrage. Our Blessed Mother makes my heart blossom into the brightest of joy. St Louis de Montfort’s words from ‘True Devotion to Mary’.

“Satan fears her not only more than angels and men but in a certain sense more than God himself. This does not mean that the anger, hatred and power of God are not infinitely greater than the Blessed Virgin’s, since her attributes are limited. It simply means that Satan, being so proud, suffers infinitely more in being vanquished and punished by a lowly and humble servant of God, for her humility humiliates him more than the power of God.”

In trial or difficulty I have recourse to Mother Mary, whose glance alone is enough to dissipate every fear.”. –Saint Therese of Lisieux

‘Tryin’ To Throw Your Arms Around The World’

A U2 song from ‘Achtung Baby’ produced by Brian Eno

Six o’clock in the morning
You’re the last to hear the warning
You’ve been trying to throw your arms
Around the world
You’ve been falling off the sidewalk
Your lips move but you can’t talk
Tryin’ to throw your arms around the world

I’m gonna run to you, run to you, run to you (Mary)
Be still (me)
I’m gonna run to you, run to you, run to you
Woman (Mary) I will

Sunrise like a nosebleed
Your head hurts and you can’t breathe
You been tryin’ to throw you arms around the world
How far you gonna go
Before you lose your way back home
You’ve been trying to throw your arms
Around the world

I’m gonna run to you, run to you, run to you
Woman (Mary) be still (me)
I’m gonna run to you, run to you, run to you
Woman (Mary) I will

Yeah, I dreamed that I saw Dali
With a supermarket trolley
He was trying to throw his arms around a girl
He took an open top beetle
Through the eye of a needle
He was tryin’ to throw his arms around the world

I’m gonna run to you, run to you, run to you
Woman (Mary) be still (me)
I’m gonna run to you, run to you, run to you
Oh, Woman (Mary) I will

(And you just gotta, you just gotta make your faith…see…)

Nothin’ much to say I guess
Just the same as all the rest
When you’re tryin’ to throw your arms around the world

I’m gonna run to you, run to you, run to you
I’m gonna run to you, run to you, run to you
I’m gonna run to you, run to you, run to you
Woman (Mary) be still (me)
Woman (Mary) be still (me)
Be still (me)
Woman (Mary) be still (me)
Woman (Mary) I will

I heard this song, reminding me of younger days, and recent weekends exploring downtown, the futility of attempting to live out the passion God is subtly able to provide. The quietness of prayer able to build to a crescendo, supplying lasting peace, in ways exhaustive and excitable ways of the most remarkable degree can not match. Prayer supplies, nurtures, prepares, and edifies. Worldly ways of experience drain, their lasting profound message demanding detachment. Regarding song lyrics, in parentheses is an approach I administer to secular songs.  The ‘she’ being sung to is Mary in my mind. Songs of love I address to my Holy Mother. In my darkest worldly and self-indulgent moments she was always with me. In the midst of decadence, blinded by strobe lights and loud music, I clung to her. I had to know the world in my prodigal way, yet never could I be without my Holy Mother. Decades of celibacy, my woman was and is Mary. I can not even think about life without her. Suffering from an unquenchable thirst to love, unable to procure worldly satisfaction–the deepest tangible, experienced, love I know is from our Blessed Mother. I am hers without question.  Weak, vulnerable, always at her mercy, she silences my fears.

“In dangers, in doubts, in difficulties, think of Mary, call upon Mary. Let not her name depart from your lips, never suffer it to leave your heart. And that you may obtain the assistance of her prayer, neglect not to walk in her footsteps. With her for guide, you shall never go astray; while invoking her, you shall never lose heart; so long as she is in your mind, you are safe from deception; while she holds your hand, you cannot fall; under her protection you have nothing to fear; if she walks before you, you shall not grow weary; if she shows you favor, you shall reach the goal.”  —-Saint Bernard of Clairvaux
